The Gundersen Health System Aphasia Support Group meets once a month on the last Saturday from 10:00-NOON in the Mooney Patient Education Room, first floor of the main clinic. Persons with aphasia and their spouses or family members are invited to attend whether they receive their medical care at Gundersen or elsewhere or if they reside in Minnesota or Iowa.
The group consists of approximately 20 individuals with chronic aphasia. We focus on socialization, caregiver support, communication activities and continuing education.
The highlight of 2017 was when I hosted a pre New Year’s luncheon at my home. The fellowship was wonderful, food was delicious and turnout was great, even though temperatures quite chilly. Also, News Channel 8 came to do a story about the Aphasia Support Group to share stories of individuals on the road to recovery!! I received many phone calls and emails about how valuable the televised story was.
Thank you for allowing me to share background about our group. It has been an honor and a privilege to facilitate this group of fine people!
