The Aphasia Project (TAP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with aphasia and their families across North Carolina.
TAP’s mission: We empower individuals with aphasia, their families, and the broader community by providing lifelong support, education, and resources to strengthen communication, build confidence, and foster meaningful connections for fully integrated lives.
At present, TAP hosts 30+ weekly conversation groups (both in-person and virtually) facilitated by licensed speech-language pathologists (SLPs). TAP’s conversation groups provide a lifelong opportunity for individuals with aphasia to continuously improve speech, language, and cognitive skills. These groups boost communication confidence and enable clients to engage more fully in social, work, and community activities. TAP also offers a weekly support group for care partners.
In-person locations currently include: Cary, Wake Forest, Raleigh (x2), Fuquay Varina, South Charlotte, Concord and Wilmington
TAP also hosts a monthly virtual training for family and friends called “Learning to Speak Aphasia”. This training defines aphasia and provides the resources loved ones need to learn “how” to speak aphasia. This skillset will improve interactions and connections for family members and friends, as well as increase communicative confidence and engagement consistent with the Life Participation Approach.
