Aphasia, Aphasia Focused, Created by a Person with Aphasia

This documentary is about a devastating condition called Aphasia; but 9 out of 10 people have never heard of the term. Yet, all sufferers have had their lives immeasurably changed. Two thirds of stroke victims of all ages have Aphasia.

More than 350,000 people in the UK are living with aphasia: a disorder of language and communication. Aphasia is caused by damage to the brain. The most common causes are stroke, severe head injury, brain tumour, or another neurological problem such as dementia.

This is the story of “On the Tip of My Tongue,” a film inspired by Jonathan Hirons’ real-life experience with aphasia. It all began in 2019 during a London meeting. Suddenly, Jonathan couldn’t speak, his thoughts trapped. He couldn’t form sentences, write, or even remember his own phone number.

Diagnosed with aphasia, a condition affecting the language center of the brain, his world was turned upside down. This is a story of resilience, of finding new ways to communicate and connect, even when the familiar pathways are blocked.

Join us as we explore Jonathan’s journey through the challenges and triumphs of aphasia, and discover the power of the human spirit to find its voice, even when it seems lost.

Before having Aphasia and making “On the tip of my tongue,” Jonathan Hirons produced factual films, most recently for the EU’s Erasmus and Leonardo projects on subjects as wide-ranging as radicalization and entrepreneurship in the creative industries. In 2014, he produced the short fiction film Cast Adrift. He now campaigned for Aphasia Awareness and hosts a podcast “On the tip of my tongue – talking about Aphasia”
