Or so They Thought: A True Story by Marina Ganetsky
This is a short engaging true story of Marina’s stroke, that she survived at age 10. It illustrates how society, schools, and even some therapists stop presuming competence about someone with aphasia. It also includes vignettes from other young adults who survived a stroke as children, and who all have aphasia.
About Marina Ganetsky: I am a 15 year old 9th grader who survived a massive stroke at age 10. I could not talk for more than a year. Not even a single sound. Some SLPs even told my parents that I will probably never talk again. But I proved them wrong. After 100s of hours of speech therapy I can talk, though I still have expressive aphasia and dysarthria. I am very involved in the Aphasia Recovery Connection. It showed me that I’m still smart and capable!
