Ask the Expert

Topic: Empowering Communication: Getting What You Need for Healthcare and Support

Expert: Brooke Hatfield, MS, CCC-SLP, CAE (she/her/hers), is ASHA senior director of health care services in speech-language pathology.

Date: Wednesday September 9, 2026

Time: 12-1pm Eastern Time (ET)  |  11am-12pm Central Time (CT) |  10-11am Mountain Time (MT) | 9-10am Pacific Time (PT)

Description: It takes a lot of communication to manage your healthlike making appointments, filling out forms, and talking to doctors. It also takes a lot to manage the non-medical things that affect our health, like housing and utilities. It’s hard for everyone, and can be really hard when you have aphasia. In this session, we’ll talk about some tools and strategies that might make it a little easier.

Communication access  means people with communication disabilities should have the same access to quality services and programs as everyone else. Effective communication is a basic human right. Making it accessible is especially important for people with aphasia.
