What is the research about?

  • How speech therapists and physical therapists can work together in nature or with horses to provide therapy for aphasia and motor function
  • Random assignment to horse-based OR nature-based environment
  • Treatment is 4 weeks, 2x/week, for 1.5-2.0 hours per session
  • Individualized treatment goals
  • Pre-treatment and post-treatment testing with PT and SLP

Where does this research study take place? Missoula, Montana

Can I participate virtually? No

Who is this study for?

  • Stroke survivors 18-75 years old who have aphasia and motor difficulties
  • Walk independently (with or without a cane/quad cane)
  • Able to sit on a horse for ~30 minutes with help from therapists
  • Able to follow simple verbal instructions in English

Who is this study not for?

  • Severe to profound cognitive impairments
  • Severe psychiatric disorders

Will I be compensated for this study, or are there costs?

$500 for study participation and $165 travel stipend if you live outside of Missoula
