“What is aphasia?” – Voices from the Aphasia Community

What is aphasia?

Aphasia is a language problem caused by damage to the brain. It makes it hard to speak, understand, read, or write. It most often occurs due to stroke or another type of brain injury, but can also occur as part of a neurodegenerative disease.

There are many places you can learn about aphasia. Perhaps the best source is hearing from people with aphasia themselves!

For the 2026 Aphasia Awareness Month and as part of our “Ask the Expert” webinar, we asked people with aphasia how they answer the question “What is aphasia?” Many people shared videos of their responses, and we have shared them on our YouTube channel. Watch a preview of these videos below, and then check out the full “What is aphasia?” YouTube Playlist.

A new, personalized script template

Maybe you already have a response ready when people ask you what aphasia is. Or, maybe you have an aphasia ID card that you share. For those who may want some support with their response, NAA Ambassador co-advisor Sara Sayers helped create a customizable template!
